Window preservation is the key to reducing extensive costs from deferred maintenance of a historic structure. Preservation is a step below in severity from window restoration as well a step below the expense of restoration or a sash reproduction. Based on the Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Wood Window Rehabilitation, window preservation is the act of treating window deficiencies, such as failing paint, loose glazing putty, broken sash cord, window painted shut, fraying wood due to solar exposure and simply time and use.
Vintage Window Restoration believes in complying with the Secretary of Interior Standards when re-mediating those window deficiencies. Our paint and putty removal process incorporates modern materials and safe handling practices. Our infrared light removal methodology safely and gently heats the sash to release the paint and putty without damaging the wood like what intensive heat guns, toxic chemical, dust generating abrasives or fiber degrading steam boxes do.
When the paint and putty is removed, the glass is intact and gently cleaned with wet and dry methods to clean and polish the glass. Parched wood is replenished with pure high grade traditional linseed oils and the glass re-bedded in traditional sash putty. All of the materials used are the same as they were when the window was originally crafted. One significant project was the partnership with the City of Cottage Grove. We developed a window project proposal for obtaining grant money to restore and preserve the structure’s 115 windows.
This was the first step towards turning the Armory into a Community Center. After working with the city, much progress has been made. The structure now hosts banquets, sports for youth, and meetings for numerous organizations. What was once left for numerous years with rumors of ghosts, is now full of life and benefits the local community.
